Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) is a painful disorder that develops after an injury, such as an injury incurred during a workplace fall or accident. Repetitive stress injuries can also lead to RSD.
RSD most commonly appears after an injury to an extremity, such as an arm, leg, hand or foot. The sympathetic nerves overact to the injury, causing a host of prolonged and debilitating symptoms. These symptoms include burning pain, swelling, joint stiffness, changes in skin temperature, texture or color, decreased limb function, muscle spasms, and profuse sweating. Various factors can worsen the sensations of RSD, including stress, environmental temperature, lighting conditions, and movement of the limb.
Doctors aren’t yet 100% sure why the body reacts in this manner, but RSD is believed to be triggered by abnormal changes in the body’s nervous and immune systems as a result of the initial injury. Because it is a relatively new condition, many physicians don’t immediately recognize this disorder in patients with RSD symptoms.
You may not be all that familiar with RSD, but it can produce more lasting consequences than you might expect. For this reason, it is important to enlist the help of a workers compensation attorney who recognizes and understands this medical disorder. Because RSD is a fairly new disease, you may need help getting the treating physician, your employer, and its insurance company to fully acknowledge your condition. If you are suffering with RSD from a work-related injury, the Vic Alexander law firm has the workers compensation experience and knowledge you need to get compensated fairly.
